5 Things to Avoid When Buying a TV Cart

Why are there so many TV carts? You’ve found the perfect TV screen that fits your budget and has all the features you need, but now finding the right TV cart feels like a daunting task. It can be a minefield of choices, and making the wrong decision can lead to frustration, wasted money, and even safety hazards. How do you get value? How do you avoid a wobbly or unstable cart? Will it even fit the mounting pattern on the back of the TV screen (known as the VESA pattern)?

Here are five common pitfalls to avoid when buying a TV cart:

1. Ignoring Weight Capacity

Not all TV carts are built to support heavy screens. If you choose a cart that can’t handle your TV’s weight, you risk instability, tipping, or even structural failure. Always check the maximum weight capacity of the cart and compare it with your TV’s weight before making a purchase.

For added peace of mind, choose carts that meet UL certification standards. These carts undergo rigorous testing for stability under real-world conditions, ensuring they remain secure and stable, even in high-traffic environments like classrooms where students may interact with the screen or move the cart frequently.

The mounting pattern on the back of your TV, called the VESA pattern, determines how it attaches to the cart. If you TV has a 200x200 VESA, it means the 4 mounting holes on the back of the screen are 200mm apart from each hole.

If your cart isn’t compatible with your TV’s VESA measurements, you’ll either need adapters or, worse, you won’t be able to mount your screen at all. Always verify the VESA specifications before buying.

Most screens use a 200x200mmVESA up to a 600x400mm VESA (and anything in between). However Cisco Webex board utilise a unique mounting pattern, so look for a brand that partners with Cisco to product approved products, such as the Salamander Designs Webex Board Pro carts.

3. Neglecting Mobility and Adjustability

A wobbly cart can be a major hazard, especially in high-traffic areas like offices, classrooms, or event spaces. Look for features like a wide base, high-quality casters with locking mechanisms, and strong materials to ensure stability. The last thing you want is a cart that shakes every time you move it. We recommend casters that are 75mm diameter (3”) like the wheels on this North Bayou cart.

Consider the needs of all users—whether it's a tall colleague who wants to avoid straining their back or someone who struggles to reach a touchscreen comfortably. Height adjustment is essential for maximising usability and getting the most out of your investment. Most carts will have a variety of screen mounting heights.

4. Sacrificing Build Quality for Price

It’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, but low-cost carts often use flimsy materials that don’t hold up over time. If you’re investing in a TV cart for frequent use, prioritise quality construction—steel frames, reinforced joints, and durable finishes can make a huge difference in longevity and safety.

Corporate AV Carts5. Assuming One Size Fits All

Not all TV carts are designed for the same purpose. Some are built for corporate boardrooms, others for classrooms, retail, events, or medical environments. Choosing a cart without considering your use case can result in unnecessary features—or missing critical ones.

For example, a corporate space may need a sleek, professional look with integrated cable management, while an education setting might prioritise ruggedness and ease of movement. Event setups might need collapsible or tool-less assembly features, whereas hospitals or care facilities often require medical-grade finishes and antimicrobial materials.

Consider how often you’ll move the cart, who will use it, and in what type of environment. Purpose-built designs deliver a better user experience and usually last much longer under daily wear and tear.

A TV cart should enhance your viewing experience, not create frustration. By avoiding these five common mistakes, you’ll find a cart that’s stable, durable, and perfectly suited to your needs. Take the time to research, compare specs, and invest in a quality solution that will serve you well for years to come.
