Collection: Detachers

Security Tag Detachers for Retail EAS Systems

Detachers are essential point-of-sale tools for every New Zealand retailer using hard tags, lanyard tags, or other mechanical EAS security devices. Our range includes magnetic detachers, pin detachers, and multifunction models designed to quickly and safely release tags at the checkout without damaging products or garments. Compatible with AM 58 kHz and RF 8.2 MHz tag systems from Checkpoint, Sensormatic, Shopguard, and most standard EAS brands.

Please note: only verified retail stores are eligible to purchase detachers. Orders placed by non-retail entities will be declined. This policy protects retailers and the integrity of EAS programmes across New Zealand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of detachers are available and how do they work?

Leading Solutions stocks three main detacher types: magnetic detachers, which use a strong neodymium magnet to release the internal locking pin of hard tags; pin detachers, which push out a retractable pin from behind the tag; and multifunction models that handle multiple tag formats. The cashier places the tag against or onto the detacher at the point of sale, the locking mechanism releases, and the tag is removed from the product cleanly and quickly.

Are detachers compatible with all hard tag brands?

Most magnetic detachers are compatible with the majority of standard AM and RF hard tags regardless of brand, as the internal locking mechanism is largely standardised across Checkpoint, Sensormatic, Shopguard, and similar EAS brands. However, some specialist tag models - such as Super Lock or ink tags - require specific high-strength or dedicated detachers. Leading Solutions can advise on compatibility for your specific tag range.

Why are detacher sales restricted to verified retailers only?

Detachers are controlled accessories because they can be misused to illegally remove EAS security tags from merchandise. Leading Solutions only supplies detachers to verified retail businesses - such as stores, supermarkets, and loss prevention operators - as part of a responsible retail security supply policy. Orders placed by unverified or non-retail entities will be declined. Business registration details may be requested during checkout or account setup.

How strong does a magnetic detacher need to be?

Detacher strength is measured in gauss. Standard hard tags require approximately 3,500–4,500 gauss to release. Super Lock or high-security tags require detachers rated at 10,000–12,000 gauss or more. Using an underpowered detacher on a high-security tag will not release it, potentially damaging the tag or frustrating checkout staff. Leading Solutions can help you select the correct detacher strength for your tag types.

Can one detacher handle both AM and RF tags?

Yes - detachers operate mechanically and the tag's EAS frequency (AM 58 kHz or RF 8.2 MHz) does not affect the detaching process. Both AM and RF hard tags use the same locking pin mechanism, so a single magnetic detacher will work on both frequency types as long as the magnet strength is sufficient. The frequency only matters for the EAS gate detection element, not the physical lock.

Does Leading Solutions offer bulk pricing on detachers for retail chains?

Yes. Trade and wholesale pricing on detachers is available to verified retail partners registered through the Leading Solutions wholesale programme. Bulk detacher orders are dispatched within one business day from our Auckland warehouse. Apply for a partner account at leadingsolutions.co.nz/pages/become-a-partner.
