Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AM and RF hard tags?

AM hard tags operate at 58 kHz and are used with Sensormatic-type EAS systems, while RF hard tags operate at 8.2 MHz and are used with Checkpoint-type systems. Both provide visible theft deterrence and electronic detection when products pass through compatible EAS gates. It is important to match your hard tags to the frequency of your store's EAS pedestals - mixing frequencies will result in missed detections.

What types of hard tags are available at Leading Solutions NZ?

Leading Solutions stocks a variety of hard tag styles including pencil tags (for clothing and thin fabric), shell tags (large format for garments), clam tags (clamshell design for delicate items), and ink tags (which release a dye if forcibly removed). Tags are available in both AM 58 kHz and RF 8.2 MHz formats. Brands include Checkpoint, Sensormatic, as well as our own sourced generic range.

Are hard tags reusable and how are they removed at the till?

Yes, hard tags are designed for commercial reuse across many product cycles. At the point of sale, an authorised staff member uses a compatible detacher - either a magnetic detacher for standard tags or a pin detacher for pin-type tags - to release the locking mechanism. Ink tags require a specific detacher to avoid triggering the dye capsule. Reusability significantly reduces the per-unit cost of your loss prevention programme.

Which products are best suited to hard tags?

Hard tags are most commonly applied to clothing (garments, underwear, accessories), footwear, cosmetics, and small electronics such as headphones and gaming accessories. Pencil tags suit delicate or thin fabrics; shell tags are better for thicker garments and jeans. For bulky boxed items, box wraps or lanyard tags are a more practical alternative to traditional hard tags.

Can I mix hard tags from different brands on the same EAS system?

Yes, as long as the frequency matches your EAS gates. For example, any RF 8.2 MHz tag from Checkpoint, Shopguard, or compatible generic brands will be detected by an RF 8.2 MHz gate, regardless of which brand manufactured the tag. Leading Solutions can advise on compatibility if you contact our team at sales@leadingsolutions.co.nz.
