Frequently Asked Questions

What is a media processor and how is it used in professional AV environments?

A media processor is a device that handles the capture, encoding, decoding, streaming, or distribution of video and audio signals in professional AV setups. Depending on the model, a media processor can be used for live streaming to platforms like YouTube or Facebook Live, recording lectures and meetings, video switching, or distributing content across multiple screens via an IP network. Leading Solutions stocks media processors from Magewell, Lumens, and Qbic for New Zealand businesses.

What is the difference between a capture device and a streaming encoder?

A capture device connects to a computer via USB and records or passes through video from an external source - such as a camera, HDMI output, or SDI feed - into software like OBS, Zoom, or vMix. A streaming encoder is a standalone device that encodes and transmits video directly to streaming platforms or a media server without requiring a host computer, making it ideal for unmanned or remote broadcast setups.

What is NDI and do your media processors support it?

NDI (Network Device Interface) is an open standard developed by NewTek that allows high-quality video to be transmitted over a standard local IP network with low latency, eliminating long cable runs. Several Magewell products in the Leading Solutions range support NDI and NDI HX output, making them well suited to IP-based production workflows in broadcast studios, corporate AV rooms, and education environments across New Zealand.

Are these devices compatible with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, OBS, and vMix?

Yes, many capture and streaming devices in our range are compatible with popular platforms including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype, Google Meet, OBS, vMix, and Wirecast across Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS. Some models are certified for specific platforms, which provides additional assurance for enterprise IT and AV teams.

What is the difference between HDMI and SDI capture devices?

HDMI capture devices are suited to consumer and prosumer sources such as cameras, laptops, game consoles, and most AV equipment with HDMI outputs. SDI (Serial Digital Interface) capture devices are designed for professional broadcast equipment that uses SDI connections, offering longer cable runs and higher reliability in demanding production environments. If you are unsure which input type your source equipment uses, contact our team for advice.

Do your media processors support continuous 24/7 operation in commercial environments?

Yes, commercial-grade media processors from Magewell and Lumens are built for continuous 24/7 operation. Features such as hardware-based processing, watchdog timers, fanless thermal design, and robust construction ensure reliable performance in demanding environments including broadcast control rooms, digital signage networks, lecture theatres, and live event production venues across New Zealand.
